Study finds that 73.7% of healthcare organizations globally succumb to ransomware demands
Healthcare organizations face a high risk of falling victim to ransomware attacks, with a staggering 73.7 percent likelihood of paying the ransom, according to a recently released report. This sector ranks fourth globally in terms of ransomware targeting, accounting for 13 percent of all attacks.
Less than a quarter of healthcare organizations have implemented MFA, a vital security measure. Additionally, just over half of the organizations surveyed reported regularly performing backups. Data encryption emerged as the most commonly employed technique in 100 percent of ransomware cases affecting the healthcare sector. The second most popular technique involved inhibiting system recovery, further exacerbating the impact on affected organizations. [Express Healthcare Management]
Nova Scotians hit by MOVEit data breach
Nova Scotia’s minister of cyber security and digital solutions, Colton LeBlanc, announced in a press conference yesterday that it is investigating the theft of personal information through a vulnerability in a third-party managed file transfer system. The province was notified of the vulnerability in MOVEit Transfer by the vendor on Jun. 1, and immediately took the system offline to install a security update.
MOVEit vendor Progress Software published a security advisory on May 31 about a critical vulnerability that “could lead to escalated privileges and potential unauthorized access to the environment.” It urged users to disable internet traffic to their MOVEit Transfer environments, and to immediately install the security update.
